Here is a photo of the second ever library director at Middlesex College, Edwin M. Ashley. What can we say...we love learning about our personal history! Contact [email protected] to inquire about our archive if you suspect you have family history stored in our collection, even if it's just a parent in an old yearbook!

Check out our "America 250" book display next to the ask-a-librarian desk on the library upper level!
In 2026, America celebrates its "semiquincentennial" (250 years of independence)! This historic milestone invites us to reflect on the nation's journey since 1776, honoring the democratic foundations and diverse voices that have shaped our story. Now is as great a time as any to reflect on the complex history of the country, and the enduring aspirations to uphold the democratic foundations of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" for every American.
This display has something for everyone! From primary documents like Thomas Paine's "Common Sense;" biographies of founding fathers like Washington and Jefferson; fine art depicting the American Revolution; and lesser-known individuals and stories from the early history of the country!

1974 was a period of great change for the working folks of Middlesex College. Shown here are picketing members of the AFSCME labor union, fighting for the rights of the worker. The woman on the right, holding an iconic "Walk a few steps in my shoes...you wouldn't survive the whole mile" sign, is Irene "Adele" Buck, an administrative aide who provided service to MC for 25 years. Next time you see a member of Middlesex's support staff, say thank you!

Uh oh, all bombs! According to this issue of Quo Vadis, Middlesex College was once more munition than it was land. At a staggering 30,000 item total, unexploded projectiles from WWI remained in the ground between North and East Halls through WWII, when an army hospital was built on campus for the war effort. It was at this time that soldiers who had been there prior remembered that they were walking on bombs and the search began in earnest!
