Clients often ask us “Should I buy or lease my business vehicle?” We always ask them the following questions:
1️⃣ How many miles do you drive a year?
2️⃣ How long will you keep the vehicle?

First of all, car lease terms have mileage restrictions, and you may pay for miles you drive that exceed the standard 10,000 or 12,000 mileage limits. Also, the two methods of acquisition differ in what happens when the vehicle is disposed of. The return of a leased vehicle to the dealer at the end of the term does not generate a gain or loss. However, selling an owned vehicle could cause a taxable event. Finally, monthly lease payments are considerably lower and tax-deductible as a business expense to the extent your car was used for business purposes.
