Staffing Leaders:
The latest ADP report is pointing to something we have not seen consistently in a while, broader hiring momentum. Private sector employers added 122,000 jobs in May. More importantly, eight out of ten sectors saw gains, and companies of all sizes were hiring. That signals growth is not just isolated to a few pockets.
ADP’s Chief Economist, Dr. Nela Richardson, summed it up well. Hiring is becoming more broad-based, and the labor market is building momentum heading into the summer.
This is a different kind of signal than what we have been seeing. It points to expanding opportunity. Staffing firms should:
- Stay close to clients and understand where hiring demand is picking up
- Be ready to move quickly as new roles open up
- Take advantage of more widespread demand across industries and company sizes
Broader hiring activity means more opportunity, but also more competition. The firms that win will be the ones that respond fastest and stay aligned with where demand is growing.
How are you preparing for the summer hiring push?

Staffing leaders:
The latest layoff data is adding another layer to what we are seeing in the market. US employers announced 97,006 job cuts in May. That is up 16% from April and slightly higher than the same time last year. Companies are still hiring in some areas, but they are also actively restructuring.
Technology continues to lead the cuts, with 38,242 announced in May and more than 123,000 so far this year.
There is also a bigger shift happening. AI is not the overnight disruption many expected, but it is already influencing workforce decisions. Companies are citing AI more than any other reason for cuts, and at the same time, increasing investment in it.
What does this mean for staffing firms? This is not just about job loss. It is about job change. Staffing firms should:
- Have more conversations with clients about how roles are evolving with AI
- Help candidates understand and build AI-related skills
- Stay close to shifts in how companies are redefining job descriptions
Many organizations are now setting expectations for AI use and reshaping roles based on what the technology can handle. That makes upskilling and reskilling more important than ever.
The firms that stay relevant will be the ones helping both clients and candidates navigate that change. How are you seeing this play out?
