I have been doing an exercise recently. It is very simple, and involves asking myself one question: "Who am I?"
Once I got past my resume, and my positive intentions, and who I wanted to perceive myself as, I began to open myself up to the truth. Who am I? How do I think? How do I treat others in my mind versus in person? How do I treat myself? What type of person am I developing into really? Am I happy with that person? If not, why am I behaving/thinking/believing this way?
The answers I have uncovered for myself have been quite profound. And with the tools in my NLP toolbox have helped me gain congruence with my unconscious and move toward the person I want to become, instead of pulling myself in opposite directions.
If you do this for yourself, and I highly recommend it, please feel free to share some insights below. If you get caught in a thought loop, try journaling. Just let your hand keep writing and read it later. You may surprise yourself.

I like roasting my own coffee. It is fresh, delicious, with very little - if any - astringency. I started this little side project about 5 years ago and yesterday I built my very first DIY coffee roaster from scratch with the things I had around my house.
Not only was I super excited about the process of creating, but when I put it to work, I ended up making the best most consistent roast ever. It was awesome!
Then I got to thinking.... I have always had these things. Over the years I've spent hundreds of dollars on different equipment, roasters, heat sources, etc. When it came down to it, my best roast happened not form seeking more stuff from vendors, sales people, and whatever then next newest best thing is. It happened when I took stock of what I had and learned how to use it in a way that delivered the outcome I sought.
I was thinking, where else does this happen. If I want to be happy, do I look inward or outward? If I want fulfillment? If I want anything at all, usually it is because of some internal desire I am looking to satisfy. But then, almost everyone goes looking "out there" to find the answer.
One of the reasons I dove so completely into NLP because it was the first time I did something different. I stopped looking at my goals and expecting them to provide me with fulfillment. I stopped looking at my wife and expecting her to provide me with love. I stopped looking at my job and blaming it for my lack of satisfaction.
You see, all of that - everything - is our responsibility. NLP teaches us techniques to reverse our focus from the external to the internal, and that is where the answers - all of the answers - are found.
Thanks for reading my story. You are awesome :) Remember that!

Have you ever thought about your inner voice? That continuous dialogue that judges, justifies, reconciles everything we experience throughout the day? Who's voice is that? I mean, if you are listening, then who is talking? What about an experiment....can you make the voice say hello? What about hello with an echo effect? What about a hello in a robot voice...? Did you do it?
So if you are the voice, and you are listening to the voice, doesn't that mean that you can change it if it isn't serving you?
What does it do, really? What is the purpose of that dialogue? Have you ever thought about what your experience would be like if you turned it down, or off, for a while? You can, you know. If you can echo, and robot, you can mute as well...
What would it be like to be cut off in traffic if that voice didn't make some sarcastic angry comment? Would it even matter?
What would happen if you took total control of your mind, your state, your thoughts... What couldn't you accomplish?

I know this is a well known story, and you've probably heard it before. Have you ever stopped to think about how certain you are about the things in your life?
Many people search for change, but when the opportunity to do something different presents itself there is often a fear response. Why does this happen? In many cases, it is because we have a feeling of safety "knowing" we can predict what will happen. If we do the same things, we get the same results, don't we?
This leads to two questions. First, can you really be totally certain that what has happened in the past will continue to happen in the future? Can you be 100% positive of this? The second question is, if you continue to make the same choices and avoid moving into the unknown, how can you ever expect a different result?
The truth is that there is no certainty. As humans we have created statistics, probability calculations, forecasting....all of these things that give us a feeling of security. The feeling is what really matters. What would happen in your life if you were to recognize that feeling of security as a red flag that you are remaining stagnant? What would happen if you embraced the unknown and marched courageously into a future you are in charge of creating?
