So homeownership comes with a list of tasks that must be done to maintain the home. These deferred maintenance tasks will save you money in the long run. You save money by treating items well so that they have a long lifespan.
In this case regular cleanings are essential. It will help decrease the chance of water intrusion.

During the last hard rain we got water in the basement. It was rather disappointing after we had done a lot of work mitigating water risks. We added a rain barrel
We landscaped
We added a second gutter ( really a reinstall - when we upgraded a few years ago the guy convinced us that we only needed one gutter on that side of the house not two so they removed one)
Kyle Frisk went outside and found that the gutter seam had started to split at an area that had been bent. We're not sure how it was bent, but he noticed the seam splitting and assumed water had come out of that seam.
So today he replaced the gutter spout with a new one.

Well when he took it apart this is what we found:

All of that was growing in our gutters obviously making it impossible for the water to come out efficiently.
