With the possibility of freezing rain and ice this weekend we would like to remind you to keep an eye on those heat pump systems. If you start to see ice forming on the top of the heat pump, around the fan we recommend switching your thermostat to Emergency (Aux) heat. This will shut down the compressor and heat using your backup heat strips or gas furnace in the event you have a dual fuel system. This will prevent damage to your heat pump from excessive ice. Below is a picture of a unit with excessive ice due to freezing rain.

Keep in mind frost is normal on the condenser coil itself and the units defrost cycle will eliminate excessive frost buildup.

Stay safe and don't forget to switch back to the normal heat mode when this is over.
