It's hot! Here's how to keep your AC running and your house cool:
- Change your air filter at least every two months, monthly if you have pets. If you ever feel like there are issues, check that first. Read below to problem solve.
- Clean off the fuzz and debris off your condenser every year so that the air can move unrestricted.
- Limit your use of your bath fan. All the air that gets blown out via the fan, has to be replaced by outside air that gets sucked in from outside. I spent awhile fixing a former clients condenser this week, and they were afraid it wasn't working until we realized they were running both bath fans continuously all day.
If you're having issues, try these steps, provided by a great local tech:
I get a lot of calls this time of year from people in a panic because their air conditioner stopped working. Not only is this an inconvenience, it can be costly to hire a company to come out depending on the day and time
Step 1- Check your furnace filter
Step 2- check the outdoor AC coils. These tend to get plugged up with cottonwoods
(clean all sides with a garden hose)
Step 3 shut switch off at furnace for 10-15 minutes
Step 4- replace batteries in thermostat (if it requires batteries)
Step 5- reset the breaker on the electrical panel
Step 6- check the fuses in the disconnect box attached to your house by the AC
Step 7- check the condensate drain to make sure it is not plugged (above furnace)
Step 8- check the capacitor on the outdoor AC unit. You can YouTube how to replace this
Step 9- if your air conditioner is running but not blowing cold air, you could have a refrigerant leak that needs to be refilled
Hopefully this can save you some time, Money and frustration
If that doesn't work, feel free to reach out to me and I'd be happy to see how I can help

So much gratitude for the chance to work with this recent client and her kind words with the most recent review:
"What a wonderful experience! Brian and his team did fantastic work in our attic renovation. The price was reasonable for the high quality, and the time frame of the project was very clearly defined. We would definitely recommend this company to all our friends, and we will use them for future work." - Joan in St. Paul"
Here's a video tour of the bathroom in the 1920's bungalow remodel. A quick overview gets nerdier as the video goes on, as I go into more detail about the design challenges and considerations. If you're thinking about remodeling in a similar space, I think that you'll find this useful. If you like this, check out the video from last week where I tour and discuss the design of the main space.

Which cozy breakfast nook do you prefer? Would you wallpaper the ceiling? These were both done this spring, in South Minneapolis homes from the 1920's.
Here's a narrated video tour of bungalow attic remodel I just finished. It starts out with an overview tour of the space and then I begin to ramble on about some of the design choices and challenges that go into finishing a space like this, if you find that useful.

I've been meditating for 22 years but I've never gotten to build a meditation space for a client who wanted one before. I love this tiny little space that we captured in the front dormer. The geometry involved was a fun challenge.

Does an off centered door bother you? For some clients, they would have preferred this door centered on the dormer wall. That would have required a swinging door, which I usually prefer, but this was a bathroom best served by a pocket door. Installing it off center allowed: 1) A space for the pocket door to slip into and 2) allowed us to bring the tub\shower towards the center of the dormer, giving us taller ceilings, and pushing the wall with the mirror and sink to the left, which lowered the ceiling over the back of the toilet and sink where it wouldn't be an issue.

It's like a shower, chiseled into a stone by the hands of Michelangelo. Thanks to for helping bring this together. Three big slabs of porcelain (and fourth for the ceiling) laser measured, cut offsite, and installed with zero grout to clean (corners are siliconed).

This addition would like to say hello! (anyone else see a face?) A big thanks to the friends who worked a sweaty/soggy week to get it ready for the roof next week. Have a great Fourth of July weekend everyone!
Another cozy 1920's bungalow primary suite completed - just in time for the holiday weekend to move in. Squeezing in a bathroom that feels roomy into the existing dormer was a fine challenge, and I love how it turned out. More details to come in the coming days.
