If you've looked, you've probably seen videos of armed ICE agents roaming Minneapolis and violently detaining people of color, taking phones and IDs, ignoring due process, denying access to basic necessities, sometimes shooting people. The economy has also taken a huge hit because people are afraid to come here, and many locals are sheltering at home because they're afraid of being taken or killed. People aren't going to work, people aren't going out to shop, and businesses are suffering. Locals are doing what they can to hold things together. So many organizations are helping people who are staying home, who have been detained, who need legal support, etc. If you're not in the area, please consider other ways to help. Contact your representatives and tell them how unacceptable and abhorrent this is. Fight for due process and demand an end to racial profiling. If you are a local and you're not afraid of being targeted by ICE, please continue to patronize our businesses; so many of them are on the brink of permanently closing. The previous administration ended dealings with Bukele after hundreds of young men (including tourists who believed that El Salvador was now "safe") were arrested and brutally tortured inside the prisons, even with no evidence of participation in gangs; many were detained for months simply because they had tattoos. More than 200 were killed, their corpses showing evidence of torture.
ICE is now making the same types of arrests in the U.S., and many detainees have "disappeared."
The U.S. is currently hosting many Venezuelans with refugee status. Journalists have not been able to verify that these "alleged" gang members have any criminal records or ties to gangs. They are not El Salvadorans, but they are being sent to an El Salvadoran prison known for torturing people to death.
