In this week's issue of DTWO, County Manager Claudia Hager discusses how Durham County is addressing hunger and highlights the upcoming Durham Hunger Day, taking place this Sunday from 3–6 p.m. at Durham Central Park.

Reminder for residents who live in unincorporated Durham County.
If you have a 2025–2026 solid waste decal, you can drop off household hazardous waste tomorrow (Saturday, June 6) from 8 a.m. to noon at the Northern Durham Convenience Site (11894 N. Roxboro Rd.).
Accepted items: aerosol cans, fire extinguishers, batteries, fertilizers, mercury, pesticides, pool chemicals, fuels, thermometers, paints, and fluorescent bulbs.
Not accepted: commercial waste, explosives, ammunition, medical or radioactive waste, or unknown/unlabeled materials.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Durham County encourages all employees to prioritize their mental health and overall well-being.
Earlier today, our Human Resources Office hosted a Mental Health Awareness Pop Up event offering employees wellness information, mental health resources, and more.

Durham County Veteran Services is hosting its annual Women Veterans Recognition Day Celebration on Friday, June 12, at 11 a.m., and the community is invited to join. The event will take place in the second‑floor conference rooms of the Durham County Human Services Building at 414 E. Main Street.
This year’s theme, “A Sisterhood of Service since 1775,” highlights the more than 250-year legacy of women who have stepped forward to serve our nation, from the American Revolutionary War to today. Honoring generations of women whose service has shaped our country as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence.
The program will feature retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Traci Goodwin as guest speaker. Attendees will also have opportunities to connect with fellow veterans and meet local vendors offering information on community resources and support services.
With more than 2,000 women veterans calling Durham County home, the community is encouraged join in recognizing their service. The event is free and open to the public, with light refreshments provided. Registration is required due to limited space.

Happy World Bicycle Day, DCo! 🚴‍♀️🌎
Whether you pedal your way to work, rely on your bike as your main mode of transportation, or simply enjoy a quick spin around the block, today we are celebrating the freedom, joy, and diversity of biking across Durham County.
Last year, we highlighted Durham County Department of Public Health Education Administrator Lindsey Bickers Bock in our Fall 2025 DCo Life Magazine. Lindsey shared how biking gives a refreshing reset at the end of a busy day: “The fresh air and physical movement create a nice break at the end of a busy workday before I shift to responsibilities at home.”
She’s still riding strong,enjoying the practical perks and everyday benefits that biking offers.
