There’s something special about sharing space with artists in the Smiley Building — and Joe Schafer is one of those quiet forces of creativity I’m grateful to call a neighbor.

Joe began his art career at 53. Self-taught and fearless, he paints on sheet metal, layering sand, clay, water, and oil-based mediums — sometimes even letting the elements finish the work. Nature isn’t just his subject… it’s his collaborator.

His landscapes feel like weather — expansive skies, shifting light, textured horizons that hold both movement and memory.
