Freeman Sound
At Jazz on the Block, presented by Jazz at WUSF, hosted by Suite E Studios, we had the privilege of hearing from D-Rod the Poet. The Poet, whose insight reminded us just how ancient, and powerful, the healing nature of sound truly is.
D‑Rod spoke about how vibrations and frequencies move through the body, and how even early civilizations understood this. The Egyptians used stringed instruments not just for music, but for well‑being, believing that certain tones could help restore balance.
That same principle lives on today:
Sound shapes emotion.
Frequency shifts energy.
Vibration helps us return to ourselves.
For D‑Rod, poetry and music are his way of getting free, releasing what’s inside, listening deeply to others, and creating space where healing can happen through shared expression.
This is the heart of FreemanSound Stories:
Community. Creativity. Connection.
And the ancient truth that sound has always been medicine.
Deep gratitude to , , .e.studios, and Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg for nurturing spaces where art and wellness meet.
Mental health is health — full stop.
As we move through Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re reminding our community that caring for your mind is just as essential as caring for your body. At FreemanSound, we use rhythm, movement, and shared experience to break stigma and open real conversations.
Let this be your cue to pause, breathe, and check in with yourself and someone you love. Healing grows in community, one beat at a time.

FreemanSound Stories: Sam on Music, Mindfulness & Mood
For Mental Health Awareness Month, Jazz at WUSF invited FreemanSound.org to join Jazz on the Block Suite E Studios to talk with the community about how music supports emotional well‑being. Huge thank you to Jazz at WUSF, the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg, and Suite E Studios for hosting this vibrant, healing‑centered space.
In his interview, Sam shared something so many of us feel but rarely say out loud: that music helps him set the vibe, lift his mood, express himself, and even slow down enough to practice mindfulness.
And the science backs him up.
Rhythm helps regulate the nervous system.
Melody supports emotional processing.
Repetition and groove activate the brain’s reward pathways, helping us shift out of stress and into presence.
Music isn’t just entertainment — it’s a tool for grounding, expression, and mental clarity. Thank you, Sam, for sharing how music supports your mental health with us!
If music has helped you find your center, share your story with
