The federal government is trying to stop money laundering in real estate. Criminals sometimes buy property using shell companies and all-cash so their identity is hidden. The new rule requires certain real estate transactions to be reported to FinCEN (Financial Crimes Enforcement Network) so the real person behind the purchase is known.

BOTTOM LINE: Think of it as “Know Your Buyer” for certain cash deals. When a class on this subject is offered, plan to attend!
