Tony is the romantic protagonist and male lead of West Side Story the musical. He is a modern-day Romeo whose earnest, starry-eyed optimism clashes violently with the brutal reality of 1950s New York. Tony is a former member of the Jets gang, but has dreams of leaving that life behind and finding happiness. Tony is deeply in love with Maria. His character represents hope and passion.
