"FROST HEAVE" under your concrete!! This occurs when water trapped in the soils under your concrete freezes during the winter months. When the water freezes it expands and pushes up the concrete causing uneven concrete and tripping hazards. This can be dangerous and frustrating especially when shoveling snow or when someone trips and falls. We get many phone calls this time of year when the weather starts to warm up and spring is on the horizon for estimates to raise and level those uneven concrete surfaces. Although it might be warming up during the day for a few hours it still gets below freezing at night, so nothing really has time to thaw out, especially north facing homes and buildings. The temps need to be above freezing for more hours in a 24hr period than below freezing to thaw out and allow the concrete to settle back into place and most the time it does. But as this cycle continues year after year you may experience uneven concrete during the warm months. This is the time to fix it by raising and leveling the affected concrete sections and sealing the joints and cracks to keep water out for the next winter.
