Did you know that setting and maintaining boundaries can help your self esteem?

If you wish things were different in your life and that others treated you differently, you may need to set more firm boundaries. There are many kinds of boundaries that we can set with others, but the key to setting them and having them work is that we need to maintain them.

Talk with your therapist about boundaries and some areas of your life that would be improved if you were to set some up to improve your life.

In trauma-informed therapy, we often talk about learning how to “put things on the shelf.” This is a regulation skill, not avoidance. When experiences, emotions, or decisions feel overwhelming, the nervous system can move into survival mode. “Shelving” is the intentional practice of storing materials to prevent system overload. It allows the brain and body to stay within a window of tolerance where processing is possible.

Putting something on the shelf means acknowledging, “This is important,” while also recognizing, “I do not have the capacity to hold this right now.” It creates psychological distance, supports emotional regulation, and reduces the risk of shutdown, panic, or dissociation.

Trauma-informed care prioritizes pacing, choice, and safety. Healing is not about pushing through. It is about learning when to pause, when to rest, and when to return to something with support.

You do not have to carry anything alone.

Our therapists are here to help you organize what feels heavy, build regulation skills, and gently return to stored experiences when your system is ready. We offer trauma-informed counseling in Draper, Lehi, and Saratoga Springs.

When you are ready, we are here to walk with you.

For many people, the New Year brings a mix of hope and pressure. For anxious minds, this season often feels less inspiring and more overwhelming.

If goal setting tends to trigger spirals, self-criticism, avoidance, or shutdown, this is not a motivation problem. It is a nervous system response.

Trauma-informed therapy approaches goal setting differently.

Instead of asking what you should accomplish, it asks what your nervous system can realistically support.
Gentle goal setting prioritizes regulation, sustainability, and self-trust over performance. Here are a few trauma-informed approach to goal setting:

▫️Start with capacity, not ambition: Ask what feels sustainable right now, what drains you quickly, and what supports regulation.
▫️Focus on regulation before results: Stability comes first. Predictable routines, rest, and reduced overwhelm create the foundation for change.
▫️Track energy, not just outcomes: Notice when you feel resourced, when anxiety spikes, and what restores you.
▫️Choose process-based goals: Practice grounding, check in with your body before saying yes, pause before self-criticism.
▫️Expect resistance without judgment: Resistance is information, not failure. Curiosity keeps you engaged without shame.
▫️Build flexibility into timelines: Progress is measured in consistency, not speed.
▫️ Celebrate consistency over intensity: Steady engagement builds trust with your nervous system and supports lasting change.

Success is not becoming a different person but learning how to live with yourself more gently.

If goal setting has felt overwhelming in the past, support can help. Rooted Counseling & Wellness is a trauma-informed therapy practice with locations in Draper, Lehi, and Saratoga Springs. Our therapists help clients set goals that align with nervous system needs and emotional health.

You are welcome to reach out when you are ready!
