Credit • Intels The most recent USDA data shows white Americans are the single largest racial group receiving SNAP benefits, at 35.4%. Black or African American recipients come next at 25.7%, followed by Hispanic recipients (any race) at 15.6%, Asian recipients at 3.9%, and Native American recipients at 1.3%, with the race of 17% of participants listed as unknown.

The same USDA report found 89.4% of SNAP recipients are U.S.-born citizens, meaning less than 11% of participants are foreign-born, further undercutting claims that noncitizens make up the bulk of the program. SNAP served an average of 41.7 million Americans monthly in fiscal year 2024, about 1 in 8 people in the country, at a total cost of $99.7 billion that year.
