Speaking on something I heard mentioned multiple times recently…
There’s been talk that ribbon skirts should only be worn for ceremony, and that’s just not accurate. That idea comes from a long history of our cultures being restricted, when our ways of life were pushed into certain spaces just to survive. Over time, that turned into this belief that cultural items only “belong” in ceremony. Please dont take that as me saying everything falls into this, I know it all doesnt work that way. Ribbon skirts come from long-standing Indigenous clothing traditions that adapted over time, they were never meant to exist only in ceremony. The idea that they should be restricted is rooted more in colonization and misunderstanding than in actual cultural practice.
For me ribbon skirts have always been more than something you wear to ceremony. They are personal. They carry identity, story, connection and those things don’t only exist during ceremony. I’d also like to think ribbon skirts are a great way to show resilience and indigenous representation.
I make these skirts, and I see firsthand what they mean to people. They are worn for healing, for pride, for everyday life, and sometimes just because someone feels connected to it that day or they feel pretty or good wearing it and ALL of those reasons are valid.
If you have a ribbon skirt and you feel called to wear it…wear it! You don’t need permission. You don’t need a specific event. Your connection to it IS enough! Wear it with pride!
Culture isn’t something we take out only when it’s “appropriate.” It’s something we live in, every single day. 🖤🖤🖤🖤
