Absolute tragedy.

On Thursday, July 2, we lost Mateo “Equis” Franco Cifuentes, and we have struggled to find the words since.

Equis was STEADFAST RC’s original Treasurer, but that title will never be enough to explain what he meant to us. He helped more children than any one member ever has, and honestly, more than all of us combined. He gave his work time, his personal time, his money, and even his own belongings if it meant helping someone else.

That was Mateo.

He did not just believe in the mission. He lived it.

Equis eventually left STEADFAST to continue pursuing higher learning in music. Saxophone was his favorite, and music was one of the ways he shared his heart with the world. He was deeply proud of his Colombian culture and always wanted the people around him to experience it with him. Even on his last official day with STEADFAST, he insisted on bringing traditional Colombian food for the rest of us.

He loved tequila. He loved music. He loved his people loudly, passionately, and without shame. In public, in private, and usually in the most embarrassing way possible, Mateo made sure you knew you were loved.

We never knew if he was quoting John Q or not, but he would always tell us:

“It’s not goodbye, my friend. It’s see you later.”

Equis leaves behind his beautiful wife, his family in Colombia and the United States, and an admiration that knew no borders.

To his family, we are so deeply sorry. We wish you every ounce of strength, peace, and love possible during this unbearable time.

We love you, brother.
We miss you with the combined hearts of everything we are.
We will miss you every single day.

The post is late because the week has been wide open, but Wednesday night at Last Call Sports Lounge was worth talking about.

STEADFAST Bike Night keeps growing, and every week the lot feels a little louder, stronger, and more alive.

To everyone showing up on two wheels, sharing the posts, supporting the bar, buying in, and standing behind We Clothe Kids, thank you. This thing works because riders keep showing up for something bigger than themselves.

Bike Night is not just a place to park. It’s a place to belong, build, give back, and remind people what this community can do when it moves together.

This morning, STEADFAST had the honor of joining Jesse’s Ride and helping bring Jesse to school.

What started as a simple ask turned into something bigger than any of us expected. We met up early, linked in with the ride, helped keep things organized and safe, then rolled with the bus parade style to make sure Jesse showed up to school surrounded by support.

And from what we were told afterward, he felt it.

Kids at the school were losing their minds when the bikes rolled in. One of them said, “What a way to show up for school.”

That right there is the whole point.

We did not show up to take over. We showed up to support. When children are involved, safety matters. Respect matters. The way we represent ourselves matters. Today, the bikes were cool, but the reason behind them was everything.

Aimee, thank you for trusting us, for letting us be part of Jesse’s morning, and for reminding us why showing up matters.

To everyone who came out, thank you. This is the stuff that makes STEADFAST what it is.
