The SeaBee Explorations Society has it on good authority that the USAF will be supporting Santa tonight with air-to-air refueling of his hot chocolate (with tiny marshmallows of course) tank as he prepares to cross the Atlantic Ocean. A positive note for a change, my friend Philippe Cousteau is on the job, and he, for one, is going to do everything he can (along with a lot of other people) to make sure our coral reefs don't disappear! Our Voyacy Regen board meeting at Dr Dave's lab in Key West was a huge success. We have an amazing team of world leading individuals in science, business, media, and we are NOT going to let coral reefs dissappear.

A check on current ocean heat in the Atlantic Basin shows we are very close to the record high ocean heat levels for the date that we saw a year ago. The Atlantic Basin sea surface as a whole is about 2 degrees C above average for the date with 90% of the Basin sea surface above average for the date. The Pacific Basin sea surface as a whole as well as the Indian Basin is also about 2 degrees C above average for the date but with about 85% of those basins’ sea surfaces above average for the date.

Note the sea surface temperatures above 90 degrees north and south latitudes are not shown. If they were they would be off the charts in the Arctic where by far the greatest global warming has occurred and the Arctic Ocean may be ice free in summer in a few years, much sooner than expected until recently.

La Niña is predicted to be over in about April (it is near over already) and a new El Niño may develop in the fall. In fact the sea surface temperature anomaly signature in the easternmost tropical east Pacific has already transitioned to an El Nino appearance. So ENSO will be in roughly the state it was last year although closer to El Niño conditions for the summer.

All this probably means we are likely to have an average to above average hurricane season this year with the potential for an early intense hurricane again like Beryl last year which was a record early Category 5 hurricane near Jamaica in early July.

Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the average peak activity date being September 10.
