Fear has held me back
From what I could have become
Fear of failure to achieve my purpose
Fear of social ineptness
Fear of failure
Fear of embarrassment
Fear of stupidity
Fear of transparency
Too old to be a child of the sixties
Got to San Francisco two years too soon
I believed but did not join
Fear of breaking rules
Fear of Uncle Sam
Fear of disappointing Dad
Afraid I’d make Mama cry
Afraid of God
Fear of drugs
Fear of the devil
Fear of getting lost

Roots

I was raised on Bluegrass, Country,
Good old Gospel songs
Got educated, sophisticated
And moved right on along
Beatles, Dylan, Denver,
The Eagles took the stage
Pretended to like Bach
But couldn’t turn the page
Went on to Kris and Prine
Joined the Outlaw band
With Waylon, Steve, and Willie
The grassroots of the land
Tried to write some on my own
Thought I found a better way
Then rolled right on down the road
Worn out memories today
