The Balanced Horse Project
07/06/2026
We lose focus when it comes to buying and training horses. Too often, the industry operates on knee-jerk reactions. A horse either fits the performance goal or it doesn't. If that horse no longer suits the program, it is often sold into the amateur market.
Somewhere along the way, we lost the mindset of looking toward the horse's future.
As trainers, we are judged by the horses we produce. Our reputation depends on our clients' success and happiness, and that begins with the life they share with their horse. When a horse carries unresolved physical restrictions or resistant behaviors into its next home, that stress becomes part of the new owner's experience.
That cycle is hurting the future of the horse industry.
What if we borrowed a lesson from Fortune 500 companies? A CEO is judged not only by today's results, but by the company's future performance and long-term sustainability.
Perhaps leaders in the horse industry should also be measured by the quality and sustainability of the horses they produce—especially the horses that go on to successful, enjoyable lives with amateur owners.
If trainers are consistently selling compromised horses, or if a discipline routinely produces them, maybe it's time to re-evaluate the standards.
The purpose of The Balanced Horse Project has always been to help shift that conversation. Through STEP RESET Training, our focus is not simply on preparing a horse for its next competition, but on identifying and resolving the physical sources of compensation and resistant behaviors that limit long-term potential. Our mission is to create a more sustainable training system that develops horses capable of leaving training and performance sound, willing, confident, and ready to build successful, lasting partnerships with the people who own and love them.
The true measure of success isn't just winning today. It's creating horses that continue to thrive, and strengthen horse-human partnerships for years to come.
That's how we create a healthier, more sustainable future and promote the future of horsemanship.
