“Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” ( #139 in Rejoice Hymns) Anthony Showalter wrote this him in 1887 after receiving two letters from former students. Each had just lost his wife. He wanted to console them with Scripture and then wrote the chorus based on Deuteronomy 33:27. With the assistance of Elisha Hoffman, they wrote this comforting hymn to remind us of God’s support during trying times. (Morgan, 219) (Morgan, Robert J.
