On this day in 1997, tragedy struck the Detroit Red Wings organization. Just six days after winning the Stanley Cup Championship, a car crash involving Vladimir Konstantinov, Slava Fetisov, team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov and driver Richard Gnida would change everything. The Wings would dedicate the next season to these individuals commemorated with a patch bearing the word “believe” in both English and Russian.

On this day in 1998, the Red Wings won the Western Conference Finals over the Dallas Stars in Game 6. After a tough overtime loss in Game 5, the Wings returned home to finish the series off by a score of 2-0. Detroit would be returning to the Stanley Cup Championship for the third time in four years and fresh off last seasons victory.

On this day in 1997, the Red Wings took Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals from the Flyers in Philadelphia. The Wings would be heading back to Detroit for Game 3 with a two game lead in the series.
