Today, we honor our very own Dr. Deborah Smith-Pollard who passed away yesterday.
Deborah Smith Pollard was a radiant light—an educator, author, speaker, and cultural voice whose impact reached far beyond the classroom. With grace, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others, she dedicated her life to celebrating faith, storytelling, and the richness of African American culture.
A proud Detroiter, Deborah built a remarkable career as a professor at University of Michigan-Dearborn, where she inspired generations of students through her passion for literature, gospel music, and Black expressive traditions. She was known not only for her scholarship but for her ability to connect deeply with people—bringing history, faith, and culture to life in every lecture and conversation.
Deborah was also a beloved voice on the airwaves, sharing gospel music and spiritual encouragement with listeners across the Detroit area. Her warmth, authenticity, and deep knowledge made her a trusted and cherished presence in the community.
An accomplished author, she wrote extensively about gospel music and faith, preserving stories and traditions that might otherwise have been forgotten. Through her work, she honored the voices of those who came before her while paving the way for future generations to understand and appreciate the cultural significance of gospel music.
Above all, Deborah was a woman of faith. Her life reflected her deep love for God, her family, and her community. She carried herself with elegance, spoke with purpose, and lived with intention—always striving to uplift, educate, and inspire.
She leaves behind a legacy of excellence, compassion, and cultural pride. Her influence will continue to resonate in the lives she touched, the students she mentored, and the community she so deeply loved.
Deborah Smith Pollard will be remembered not only for what she accomplished, but for how she made people feel—seen, valued, and inspired. Her voice may be quiet now, but her legacy will echo for generations to come.
Sending love and support to her amazing husband, family and friends.
