It is the 40th anniversary of EMS week; a lot has changed in the industry since 1974. One constant has been the dedication of our providers. Thank you to the 33% who are compensated providers; the 55% who are uncompensated providers; and the 12% that are a combination of both. Without your efforts this would not be possible. Thank you to the 880 services, the medical directors and the business within our communities that allow for our EMS providers to respond while on “company time!”
EMS has become more and more important to the coordinated treatment of trauma, and getting patients to pre-designated trauma centers quickly. EMS is critical to the chain of survival for sudden cardiac arrest. We’ve given medics more resources, a wider variety of medications, increasingly better training and we are even looking forward to a future where they may be participating in some outpatient care in medical surveillance for conditions such as congestive heart failure. By providing definitive patient care in the field, EMS improves our ability in the emergency department to extend care to where it is needed.

Children are the most precious commodity a state has to offer. They provide joy and for EMS they are a source of stress and anxiety when they are the reason for the 9-1-1 call. For the last three decades, the EMS for Children Program has successfully raised awareness among healthcare professionals, EMS and trauma system planners, and general public that children respond differently-physically, emotionally, and psychologically-to illness or injury than do adults. From child passenger safety events, bike safety, pedestrian safety to doing simulated pediatric calls, Iowa’s EMS are dedicated to our state’s children
