Dear Hiatt Scarlet Families,

My name is Joseph Green and I’m honored to serve all of you as the principal of Hiatt Middle School. This upcoming school year, 2025-2026, will by my 10th year at Hiatt, 3 as a student, and my 7th year as the Principal. I have previously served in a number of roles in education, including 7th grade Geography teacher at McCombs Middle School, Dean of Students at Harding Middle School and Goodrell Middle School, School Improvement Leader at Hoyt Middle School, and Vice Principal at North High School. I am so very honored and excited to serve as Hiatt’s Principal and being able to partner with you in your child’s education. I believe it is the relationships that are formed and the collaboration between students, families, and staff that make Hiatt special. I look forward to continuing to foster a learning environment conducive to high levels of learning and growth at Hiatt.

On a more personal note, my family includes two sons and one daughter, Eli (17), Carson (14), and Norah (11) who love school, baseball, football, music, cereal, and being with their friends. We were lucky enough to spend time in June and July playing a lot of baseball, attending summer camps, and enjoying the outdoors. My wife, Brenda, works for Principal Financial Group as a software engineer and enjoys exercising, reading, and cheering on our kids.

I love getting to know students and families at Hiatt, some being former classmates, friends, and now former students. I am looking forward to meeting many of you as you come in to register and attend our Back to School Open House on August 20 from 5:30pm-7:30pm for 6th graders Only* and August 21 5:30pm-7:00pm for 7th and 8th graders, as well as throughout the school year in the building or at school activities and events. Our students are a remarkable group of hard working, interesting, and diverse learners. Every day I see our school values of Courage, Confidence, Compassion, and Community on full display by our students; I take pride in the fact that you trust us with their education, safety, and growth.

Plans are well underway to create a great start to our new school year, welcoming back returning students, helping new students transition smoothly, and celebrating the start of another great school year. Our registration window is open and available for you to complete online! If you need any help registering your student, please feel free to give us a call, 242-7774 to help over the phone or make an in-person appointment. As we get closer to the start of the school year, I will be sending out more information, via Infinite Campus messenger, Parent Square, and our social media accounts, regarding accessing student schedules, our student handbook, fall activities and after school clubs, and other information to help you be ready for a smooth transition into, and back to, Hiatt for our first day of classes on Monday, August 25th.

I’m extremely excited to once again engage with our students and all of you as partners in our students' educational journey. Our school values of Courage, Confidence, Compassion, and Community will continue to be front and center as we embark on this 2025-2026 school year together. The staff at Hiatt Middle School are dedicated to providing a quality education and a caring environment; we are proud to have a team of amazing teachers to carry that out.

Your input and support are very important to what we do here at Hiatt. My promise to you is to work tirelessly to sustain and grow this wonderful community that I’m so lucky to serve and be a part of. We value relationships and look forward to getting to know you and your child as members of our Hiatt family!

Des Moines Public Schools Cell Phone Use Policy & Purpose: At Des Moines Public School District (DMPS), we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment that empowers every student to achieve their full potential. We recognize that cellphones and personal devices are integral parts of our students' lives, serving as tools for communication, learning, and personal expression. Our goal is to implement a district-wide cellphone policy that respects these needs while minimizing instructional distractions, supporting mental health, and enhancing educational outcomes. The purpose of this policy is to establish clear guidelines for the use of cell phones within Des Moines Public Schools. These guidelines are intended to ensure a focused, respectful, and productive learning environment for all students, with emphasis on minimizing any disruptions to instructional time. For the purpose of this policy, “cell phone” includes all cellular connected devices, including, but not limited to cell phones, headphones, gaming devices, and smart glasses.

Cell phones, earbuds, headphones, and game devices cannot be used at any time during the school day, in compliance with DMPS Middle School policy and state laws. Cell phones will be turned into period one teachers at the start of the day and locked up until period 7 teachers pass them back out at the end of the day. All devices should be turned off when turned in at the start of the day. All cell phones will be safely locked in a secure location of our building during school hours with student's name, period 1 teacher name and period 7 teachers name attached. Violation of this policy will lead to the student turning their phone, earbuds, headphones, or game device into an adult, or requiring parents to pick up the phone/earbuds/headphones/game device. Parents and families who need to contact their students during the school day can call the main office at 242-7774. Students needing to call home during the day may ask to use the phone in their classroom or main office. Please refrain from texting and calling students during class time.

Student drop off and pick up:
All students are to use their assigned entrance before 8:30 a.m. to enter the building. When dropping off students before 8:30 a.m. or picking-up students between 3:30 p.m.-3:45 p.m. please use the parking lot located on E. 15th street and Garfield Avenue. This will help reduce traffic congestion during these times and limit student attendance delays. Please be mindful to not park at the corners of Garfield or 15th street as students need to be able to access the crosswalk and other drivers need to be able to pull around.
The south entrance on University Avenue WILL NOT be used from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. for pick-up and drop-off and will be locked starting at 8:30 a.m. The 15th street entrance will be the ONLY entrance available from 8:30am-4:00pm. After 4:00pm the University entrance will be available ONLY for Boys & Girls Club pick-up.

Hello Hiatt Families,

Thank you to all the students and families for making 24-25 a great year at Hiatt! We are SO PROUD of all of our students and thankful for allowing us to partner with you in your students education this year.
June 5th is a 12:25 pm early dismissal for the final day of school.

Please encourage students who may have lost any coats, hoodies, articles of clothing, or water bottles to check our lost and found before the end of the year. On June 6th we will discard any remaining items in the lost and found.

All student computers and charging cords should have been turned in last week. Please speak with your student about making sure the computer and charger were turned in, so you do not incur any charges.
Final grades for the school year will be available to view at the end of the week in Infinite Campus.

In preparation for next school year, please start conversations with your students about DMPS new middle school cell phone policy that will not allow students to have cell phones, headphones, or earbuds out at any time during the school day. This is a change from our current policy that allowed these items to be out during passing and lunch, that will NOT be the case at any middle school in DMPS starting next year. Next year we will be implementing a first period cell phone check-in process for students to turn in their cell phones and have them safely and securely locked up in the school until the end of day, when they will be checked back out to students. You are always welcome and encouraged to have students keep their phones, headphones, and earbuds at home to avoid temptation and possible violations. This policy is intended to ensure a focused, respectful, and productive learning environment for all students, with emphasis on minimizing any disruptions to instructional time. We will continue to send reminders out about this change leading up to next school year but wanted to give everyone an early update about the change.

We are looking forward to closing out a joyful school year with field day and ISASP/Fast Bridge testing raffle on June 3rd.

We hope you have a safe and relaxing summer with your family and can't wait to see many of you in August.

Go Scarlets!
