No, I’m not afraid of AI in the arts. One thing I’m pretty sure AI will never do… make anything by hand. But that’s not to say tech isn’t huge and in the arts for good. In fact I use it a good bit to compose. It can save some time and more importantly it can expose mistakes long before I put paint to canvas. It’s also just a chance for me to see my works in an entirely different way! For example… here’s a sequence of a piece coming together for a client to consider. Layers, crops, fades, all courtesy of the iPad. Great fun!

One of my favorite art stories… Durinh WWII Picasso was living and working in Paris. At some point in the N**i occupation a German officer visited his studio and encountered “Guernica”, arguably Picasso’s greatest work. Evidently shaken by the visual chaos embodied in the work, and perhaps even aware of the painting’s horrific inspiration, the officer asked the painter “Did you do this?” To which Picasso replied “No. You did.”

Great art is not always created when the mind and spirit is at play. In fact, in my opinion, far more great art has been born during times of crisis, chaos, tragedy, and rage. Let whatever you’re feeling during these trying times feel your creativity. In other words, in trying times, keep trying!
