Gorgonopsian skulls! Gorgonopsians are often called the “Original Sabertooths” due to the presence of their enourmous sabers and the fact they lived millions upon millions of years before saber toothed cats (all the way back in the Permian). In life, these guys would have looked very unique, they belong to the Synapsida clade, which means they share close relation to mammals. In a lot of ways, they were sort of the precursor to mammals. I took these photos at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science a few weeks back. I absolutely loved seeing this little display, because Gorgonopsians are incredible! (Especially Inostrancevia).
The skulls here are: Rubidgea (top) lycaenops (middle) and Inostrancevia (bottom).
Thank you for the awesome terrarium! I am very much looking forward to the release of Surviving Earth!
