Our featured plant this week is the Bearberry. Used for groundcover, it is an evergreen with a red berry. It is a hardy plant well adapted for mountain air. The delicate blooms will last through May and June. Surprisingly, western First Nations included it in smoking mixtures, giving it its informal name, 'kinnikinnick '.

Colorado was aptly nicknamed the Columbine state. While the blue columbine (Aquilegia coerulea) is our state flower and more famous locally, columbines come in many colors and represent over 60 species. This lovely creature is a Red Star Columbine.

The Eastern Red Bud is a beautiful addition to our historic neighborhoods.

Mexican Feather Grass and Little Bluestem are hardy grasses perfectly suited to a Denver yard. Low water and low maintenance, with a variety of looks throughout our four seasons. As shown at Denver Botanic Gardens, a good reminder to think past bluegrass.

In the arid climate of Olvera, a wall of succulents adorns this ancient wall. A succulent wall is easily adapted to Denver and makes for a low maintenance but highly decorative option.
