The government is not coming to rescue us. We must create a pathway that leads to safety, security, and support for our adult autistic children. Nonprofit agencies and other social programs are often budget-constrained and have limited outreach and scope. Shortages of staff and trained personnel have forced a number of these agencies to either close their doors or limit the services they provide.

The common misconception about autistic adults is that they have support programs that already exist through government programs. Government programs are virtually non-existent for adults with autism due to cuts in funding and changing political agendas.

Autism bias is real and often hinders progress. Organizations can become so steeped in traditions that they fail to change, even when hitting the “reset” is painfully obvious. Having more autistic people serve on the boards of directors of community-based nonprofits could benefit agencies and their clients.
