In East Los Angeles, on June 3rd, 1943, white U.S. servicemen attacked Latino youth — some as young as 12 — who were wearing zoot suits (a type of oversize suit which was tapered at the ankles and often worn by Black jazz musicians).
Driven by changing population demographics and racism, the Zoot Suit Riots weren't about fashion — they were about racism, wartime hysteria, and who gets to belong in America. Young Mexican Americans wearing those wide-lapeled, high-waisted suits were seen as "unpatriotic" — even as their own brothers served overseas.
81 years later, the Zoot Suit Riots are still a story about power, scapegoating, and resistance. ✊
