Mexico remained neutral during World War II until German U-boats sank two Mexican tankers in 1942, killing dozens of sailors. This led President Manuel Ávila Camacho to declare war on the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan).

Two years later, Mexico sent Fighter Squadron 201 – known as the Aztec Eagles – to fight alongside Allied forces in the Pacific.
