"Scholarship Stories" with 2025 Ghillie Grant Winner, Caitlin β¨ "Performing in tattoos has given me a newfound love and passion for Highland. I have always loved choreography, and I found performing in the Virginia International Tattoo really allowed me to show off how much I love creativity within highland.
My favourite part was walking onto the esplanade on opening night, which also happened to be my 18th birthday! Hearing the applause and being able to dance my heart out for thousands of people is an experience I think every highland dancer should have in their life - there are no words for how amazing it is! I have also made so many friends from all over the world, from not only my dance teams but also pipe bands, and military groups. The friendships Iβve made from this experience will certainly last a lifetime!
Experiencing the long days of training, fun costumes and choreography, as well as being able to dance with a group rather than competitively on my own has made me so eager to be apart of every opportunity available to me. Not only have I been able to enjoy the choreography aspect of highland, but it has also motivated me to put in more effort in my competitive training, and made competitions so much more fun as I find Iβm now dancing for the love of it!
Living in New Zealand means there are very limited opportunities for us to compete and perform in big events, and I think often we loose sight of what dance is really all about. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity to dance worldwide, and I hope my experience inspires other dancers in small places like New Zealand to get involved and dance all over the world. I cannot say enough how my tattoo experiences have meant to me!β
