Invented in 1883 the flying pendulum/flying ball/ "Ignatz" clock is a clock using a small metal ball on the end of a string as a pendulum. The ball swings in a circular motion to one side where it wraps around a brass post, unwraps and swings to a post on the other side repeating the motion. Notoriously poor timekeepers, the clocks crazy motion lead to the "Ignatz" nickname after a character in a the "Krazy Kat" comic.
