Chiune "Sempo" Sugihara Monument, Wasada University, Tokyo, Japan…

In the summer of 1940, while serving as a foreign diplomat for the Japanese government in Lithuania, Chiune “Sempo” Sugihara, realized that he needed to act and to act quickly. In a very short period of time he issued over 2,140 transit visas to Jews who needed refuge. The majority, not all, ultimately found safety by escaping through the Soviet Union and making it to East Asia.

Given the nature of alliances during the Second World War, the shear logistics of any of this is simply mind-boggling.
Later in life, Sugihara would say, “…I made the decision I made not as a diplomat, but as a human being. I did what I believed was just and right.”

Sadly, it took many years for Sugihara to be recognized as the hero he was. He was dismissed from his diplomatic position because he had “defied orders” shortly after the war.
If you’re curious, there are two links below that will give you more information about him.

Note*…Sugihara is a Distinguished Alumnus* of Wasada University. He only attended the university his first year, majoring in the English Studies. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw due to financial reasons. Due to his humanitarian aid and recognition, the university has honored him as a Distinguished Alumnus.
