500 days ago I decided I wasn’t going to ignore the check engine light any longer. Yes, this was the day that I stopped drinking alcohol, but also the day I decided to lift the hood and see what was under there. I never set a goal to never drink again, or not drink for a certain period of time, and I still don’t think ahead. I decided that day that I was ready to tune up my life and stop being annoyed with the blinking light of my KNOWING. I decided I was going to create a life that was better than fine and better than what was expected of me. I was ready to give society and the status quo the middle finger and take the road less traveled.

Here is what 500 days of radical self care looks like:

Starting each day with a clear head after a solid night’s sleep
Better connections with my family and friends
Having the courage to shed things that no longer serve me (both people and things)
Solid boundaries (If I’m not a “HELL YES”, then I’m a “NO”)
Handling tough moments responsively rather than reactively
Conscious parenting on more days than not
Not taking things personally
Feeling strong and healthy in my body
Trusting the process rather than being attached to a goal
Steady mood through perimenopause

Choosing radical self care and a life of mindfulness is one of ease. Not that there isn’t pain or hard moments, but I have enough gas in my tank to carry me through. It’s the ultimate gift.

The hood is still up and I’m still tinkering. I’m fully in the flow of each day, focusing on the next right thing.

What blinking light are you ignoring? What would happen if you dared to lift the hood?
