Bleeding Heart
Some flowers go in and out of style, but bleeding heart has stood the test of time. Bleeding heart is a fairly substantial plant, growing to around 2 to 3 feet tall with a similar spread. Its puffy, heart-shaped blooms arrive from April to May, dangling off the arching stems. The plant typically goes dormant in the heat of summer. However, the fringed-leaf varieties not only stick around, but they can repeat bloom throughout the summer and gradually self-seed. Keep the plants well watered throughout the summer, but make sure they’re not sitting in soggy soil. No pruning or deadheading is necessary.

The Coreopsis genus is home to many popular garden plants. Most bloom periodically throughout the summer season. But if you prune back your plant after it flowers it will put on a glorious fall floral display. Bees and butterflies tend to love the daisy-like blooms. Most diseases and pests avoid the plant. Watering usually isn't essential unless you go for a long stretch without rainfall.

Mountain Laurel
Native to the woodlands of eastern North America from New England to the Florida panhandle, mountain laurel looks like a lot like its close kin, rhododendron. It shares rhododendron's love for acidic soil, shade, and cool, moist air.

And like its cousin, it can be challenging to grow. Some types of mountain laurels thrive in hot, humid climates, while others are only happy in cooler climates. How well your mountain laurel does will depend on whether you choose the right variety for your area.
