The horrible gang r**e in New Delhi, followed by the death of the victim 2 days ago is dominating the world headlines on New Year's eve. Many festivities in India have been called off. Maybe this country is heading into a new era and making some substantial changes to its shameful women's rights situation?

India's sobering New Year's eve On December 16th a 23-year old student was gang r**ed by six men in New Delhi. She died from her injuries in a hospital in Singapore in December 29th. All six men have been arrested and charged with murder. The name of the victim has not been released yet.

Malala Yousafzai, a 14 year-old girl in Pakistan got shot. She was blogging about life as a girl in an area ruled by the Taliban. She was one of the best-known schoolgirls in the country. A Pakistani Taliban spokesman told the BBC they carried out the attack. She's in a hospital now where she had surgery. Add her to your hero list.
