How did they start the ME-262?

Despite the Junkers Jumo 004 engine being revolutionary for its time, one lesser known element of the engine was the RIEDEL starter RBA / S 10 (RLM-Device Number 9-7034 A). At a might 10 horsepower, the two-stroke, flat-twin was capable of starting the Jumo 004 engine.

The Riedel was started with a simple pull cord, much the same way you’d start a lawn mower at home!
