A common misconception about grounding is that it is a way to distract from what you’re feeling. But grounding and distracting are not the same thing. The purpose of grounding is to root yourself in the security and stability of the present, so that you can handle the emotions that are showing up. When you’re grounded, you might separate yourself from what you’re feeling to the extent that your emotions aren’t controlling you. They’re not taking over. But this doesn’t mean you don’t experience them. Instead, grounding is a tool that allows you to experience your emotions for what they are: temporary states that have a beginning, middle, and end.
