When management guru Peter Drucker was asked, at the end of his life who was his guru, he described Mary Parker Follett as "the brightest light in the management firmament".
For over a century she has been ignored by academics, management schools or leadership programs.
In the 1920's women were not considered qualified to be leaders in organizations or society, and yet here was a thinker who laid the foundations for Lean Systems and Agility over a hundred years ago.
Long before any of us or even our parents were born, in the 1920's Mary wrote about the nature of power, how healthy organizations need to apply pull over push systems, the importance of distributed power, collaborative intelligence, how to navigate uncertainty and make diversity a valuable asset.
She coined the term "co-active leadership" which is now used by the largest coaching certification company in the world.
She described "servant leadership" decades before Robert Greenleaf and "situational leadership" long before Blanchard, and "Win-Win Negotiations" long before Harvard took the term and approach and sold it as their own.
Mary Parker had a very clear and simple definition of leadership: "Leaders create leaders, not followers".
Requisite Agility is the capacity to make the right choice and take the right action, rapidly and flexibly in the moment, in real time based on what is required. Mary Parker described how to do this.
During the upcoming Requisite Agility Unleashed Conference, on 7-9 December, 2021, Kashmir Birk will be sharing insights from this forgotten "godmother of management" in his fireside chat with one of the co-founders of Requisite Agility, Benjamin Taylor.
Kashmir will share how Mary Parkers systems allow for the sustaining and scaling of Agility.
