The city of Powell will soon have a new veterans memorial at Powell Cemetery to honor those who don’t have a grave or may be buried in an unmarked grave.
The Powell monument is a product of the “Unmarked But Unforgotten” program, a joint veterans memorial initiative across Delaware County coordinated primarily by Delaware County Veteran Services and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), which aims to honor the Revolutionary War veterans with unmarked graves throughout the county.
The monument is a single polished black granite tablet standing approximately 8 feet tall and weighing approximately 6,975 pounds. The front of the monument will feature laser-etched imagery depicting a Revolutionary War soldier doffing his cap to a saluting present-day soldier, with the dates 1776–2026. Below, bronze military insignias representing each branch of the armed forces will be etched.
