SVG Came In as the Favorite at San Diego. He Left 38th.
Shane van Gisbergen came into Naval Base Coronado as the street course specialist and the clear favorite to win. He was out by Lap 32. A restart pileup in Turn 1 triggered by Austin Hill collected SVG, Connor Zilisch, Ryan Blaney, Ty Gibbs, and five others. SVG had nowhere to go and slammed into the wreck from behind, ending his race on the spot. He said after that he was "filthy." He finished 38th, 44 laps down.

Richard Childress Racing officially retired the No. 8 following Kyle Busch's death in May. The team is running No. 33 for Austin Hill for the rest of the season, and Childress confirmed the No. 8 is being saved for Brexton Busch when he makes his way up through the ranks. Childress said Kyle "loved it so much. He wanted to see his family carry on." The number that defined one of the most polarizing careers in Cup history is now a placeholder for the next generation.
