Calendly, Grammarly, and Zapier hit profitability in just 2-3 years.
Intuit Mailchimp took 9 years but did it all bootstrapped!

Here’s what I learned from their journeys to profitability:

🟩 Have a bootstrapping mindset (even if you’re VC-backed).
Grammarly’s early success was all about bootstrapping.
They now have over 30M daily users and didn’t take any outside money for the first 9 years.
When they did raise serious funds in 2017, they scored $110M at a $1B+ valuation.

🟩 Don’t be afraid of bold moves
In 2009, after 9 years with no free plan, Mailchimp launched "free forever" plan.
Profits shot up 650% in a year, users jumped from 85k to 450k, and paying users increased by 150%.
Their ARR hit $2M, and they finally reached profitability.

🟩 Get paid ASAP
Make sure you can be paid by your customers and make a profit early on.
Tope Awotona was lucky to raise $350k to build those payment integrations, but it would have been much less stressful if he could do that early on.
