“Not 16. Not 14. Not even 12. Transition starts the moment independence begins.”
One of the biggest misconceptions in transition planning is the idea that transition begins at a specific age.
In reality, transition begins the first time a student starts building independence.
Every opportunity to:
• make decisions
• solve problems
• practice responsibility
• navigate real-life situations
…is transition.
Waiting until high school, or even later, to focus on independence can leave students unprepared for the realities of adult life after school.
Transition is not a meeting.
It is not paperwork.
It is not a checklist.
It is the ongoing process of helping students function more independently over time.
The earlier we begin, the stronger the foundation becomes.

Social skills impact almost every part of adult life. They affect friendships, teamwork, employment, self-advocacy, and the ability to handle everyday situations with confidence. While academics are important, students also need opportunities to practice communication, listening, flexibility, emotional awareness, and problem-solving with others. These skills are not built through instruction alone. They grow through real interactions, experiences, and consistent practice over time. Learning how to communicate effectively and work through challenges with other people helps students become more confident, connected, and independent in school, work, and the community. Today's quote reminds us that social skills are not extra skills, they are essential life skills that help students participate successfully in the world around them.
