In 1909, a determined expedition crossed the frozen Arctic in pursuit of the North Pole. After months of grueling hardship, a small group pressed on. On April 6, an American flag was raised at what they claimed was the geographic North Pole, a milestone in exploration history that continues to spark debate today. Among the team was Matthew Henson, a skilled explorer whose expertise proved essential to the effort.
Born in 1866, Henson rose from modest beginnings to become indispensable on multiple Arctic journeys. He mastered the Inuit language, learned vital survival techniques, constructed sleds, trained dogs, and navigated the treacherous ice. His skills and determination were crucial throughout the expedition.
“The lure of the Arctic is tugging at my heart. To me the trail is calling! The old trail, the trail that is always new.” — Matthew Henson
His legacy lives on, including through an interesting family connection: Matthew Henson was the brother of Taraji P. Henson's great-great-grandfather, making him the great-great-granduncle (often called great-great-uncle) of the acclaimed actress.
