Memorial Day has carried a different weight for me these past six years. In 2019, we were packing up the kids to head to my parents’ house for a simple Memorial Day BBQ. Instead, I rushed Clayton to the emergency room. He couldn’t breathe. We soon learned his lungs were almost completely filled with cancer. I knew, deep down, that this was the beginning of the end. Memorial Day used to mean flags and fireworks. Now, it’s layered with a personal grief that runs deep. Clayton served in the Navy. He knew sacrifice. He lived it, with honor, with strength, and love. So today, I remember him and I also honor all the brave men and women who have given their lives in service to our country. If you’re grieving today, you’re not alone. These “griefy” days remind us just how fragile and precious life is. Celebrate, laugh, cry, rest or whatever you need.
