Yesterday, the African American Caucus of DeKalb County proudly joined the Dunwoody Fourth of July Parade alongside our fellow DeKalb Democrats.

As America celebrates 250 years of democracy, we recognize that democracy has always been a work in progress. For Black Americans, the fight for equal voting rights, equal representation, and equal opportunity has never truly ended. Yesterday reminded us that we are not fighting alone. Democracy is strongest when communities show up together, march together, and vote together.

Our presence in the parade was about more than celebration—it was about demonstrating what democracy looks like when people from every background stand united in protecting it.

This November, let's continue the work. Re-elect Jon Ossoff, elect Keisha Lance Bottoms, support Josh McLaurin for Lieutenant Governor, and vote the entire Democratic ticket.

Let's keep democracy alive for the next 250 years—and ensure those years are defined by inclusion, justice, and opportunity for everyone, where Black Americans no longer have to fight to be fully included, but are recognized as equal partners in building our nation's future.

It was a pleasure to attend Invest in South DeKalb's Community Networking Event yesterday. The evening provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and residents who are committed to making a positive impact in South DeKalb's communities.

The conversations centered on collaboration, and building a stronger future in South DeKalb. Events like this is a reminder that unity, engagement, and shared purpose are essential to moving South DeKalb forward.

Last night demonstrated that South DeKalb has a voice, and people are speaking up, getting involved, and working together to create positive change!!

Thank you for the invitation and for bringing the community together. I look forward to continuing these conversations and exploring future opportunities to collaborate and serve our community.

We spent the most part of the Georgia General Assembly Special Session listening to floor debates, reviewing legislation, and taking notes on issues that could impact voters across our state.

Some key actions included:

✅ SB 3EX passed, extending the deadline for replacing Georgia's touchscreen voting system and delaying implementation of QR code ballot counting requirements.

✅ New election legislation requires manual hand recounts in extremely close races and changes who will oversee future voting equipment standards.

✅ Discussions around redistricting ultimately did not move forward during this special session.

✅ Property tax legislation aimed at giving local governments another option for offsetting homestead property taxes failed to gain enough support for passage.

One thing that stood out was the passion and, at times, frustration during debate. It was a reminder that decisions made under the Gold Dome affect all Georgians, regardless of their political party affiliation.

Democracy works best when informed citizens stay engaged.

In the third phase of the Special Session, legislative work continues with a central focus on protecting all Georgians, strengthening accountability, and ensuring effective governance. Democratic legislators are leading efforts to ensure ongoing protection of all Georgians, reinforcing accountability, and ensuring effective governance.

What remains consistent throughout this process is the responsibility to the public. The work before the legislature requires clarity, discipline, and a steady commitment to the people of Georgia.
Representation is a responsibility to the public—one that demands oversight, transparency, and a focus on outcomes that strengthen communities across the state.

This hour of work was important, and it remains important that we continue showing up and staying engaged in this process.

The next session will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. I hope to see you all there.

Happy Juneteenth!

Today, we celebrate freedom, resilience, and the enduring strength of Black Americans. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865—the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

As we honor the sacrifices of those who came before us, we also recognize the responsibility we carry to protect voting rights, advance equity, and continue the work of building stronger communities for future generations.

Juneteenth is more than a day of remembrance. It is a celebration of freedom, perseverance, culture, and hope.

The African American Caucus of DeKalb County wishes everyone a meaningful Juneteenth!

Today, Georgia’s GOP removed redistricting from the agenda for the special legislative session. This moment underscores how decisions made at the Capitol directly impact representation, voting power, and the voices of our communities across Georgia.

As we celebrate Juneteenth and reflect on the ongoing struggle for freedom, justice, and equal representation, we are reminded that democracy is shaped by participation—and it does not pause.

The African American Caucus of DeKalb County encourages residents to stay informed, stay engaged, and stay involved in the issues that affect their communities, their rights, and their future.
