Environment Health Safety Coordinator - $75 - $95k

The EHS Coordinator, under general supervision, monitors safety and security performance including injuries, injury prevention, hazard identification, hazard control and correction, compliance with OSHA, EPA and DFI regulations and policies that result in the reduction of accidents and illnesses and assures regulatory compliance. The EHS Coordinator trains and monitors employees in improving skill levels to ensure adherence to principles, policies and standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Prepare and submit reports for all Environmental Health and Safety programs as required by Federal, State and Local agencies.

• Coordinates compliance with applicable/safety regulations as required by EPA, OSHA, and other relevant state and federal agencies. Keeps apprised of changing laws, regulations, and standards.

• Ensures that DFI’s Safety Program is properly established, implemented, and maintained, and its efficiency is continually improved.

• Serves as the single point of reference for safety metrics and the point of contact for all company safety communications. Acts as the central point for collection and publication of safety and security information for company-wide distribution.

• Inspects physical plant and conducts routine safety and security inspections several times a month to identify areas of risk and hazards.

• Understands and adheres to all safety and environmental policies and integrates safety and environmental considerations into daily work activities.

• Conducts New Hire safety orientation training.

• Coordinates with an approved agency for the disposal of environmental waste.

• Maintains Safety Material Data Sheets (SDS) on any type of possible hazardous material used and/ or brought into the workplace.

• Conduct job hazard analysis (JHA) of all positions on the production floor and update the JHAs as needed.

• Provides required equipment training and certifications for employees, including but not limited to forklift and material handler certification, and specific equipment safeguards.

• Coordinates safety contingency plans and emergency response plans (fires, spills, etc.). Conducts safety drills on a regular basis, such as fire and weather-related emergencies.

• Identifies a team of first responders to handle emergency medical responses. Works with first responders to be sure training is updated to requirements and that the team is trained in the use of eyewash stations and first aid cabinets, as an example.

• Investigates injuries and accidents with detailed descriptions, corrective actions, advises on disciplinary action and follows through to ensure corrective action is implemented.

• Completes all required OSHA and insurance documentation including OSHA 300, OSHA 301 and Incident/First reports of injuries in a timely manner. Also posts annual OSHA summaries between Feb. 1st through April 30th in the employee break area.

• Chairs the Safety Committee and ensures that they meet on a regular basis.

• Writes and obtains approval on appropriate DFI safety-related policies and procedures.

• Feels comfortable working in a team environment with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of management.

• Communicates in a constructive manner and maintains a positive approach to achieving goals.

• Establishes a “5S” philosophy within the safety and environmental areas.

• Establishes and monitors a program for reporting and investigating “near-miss” situations.

• Ensures the company is in compliance with all State and Federal Environmental laws.

• Monitors safety supplies and coordinates the purchasing of Personal Protective Equipment.

• Assesses new developments in the safety field that may have application to the company’s operations. Monitors and evaluates new safety and industrial hygiene regulatory developments as they pertain to operations of the plant.

• Recognizes trends in both recordable and un-recordable incidents and takes appropriate action to be sure trending is in the right direction.

• Ensures that the plant safety map is kept up to date and posted with changes that occur.

• Serves as the plants primary contact for coordination and participation in EPA and OSHA inspections and responds to requests for information.

• Conducts annual safety and industrial hygiene training of personnel in areas related to general safety and health awareness, ergonomics, chemical safety, and spill response, handling OSHA inspections and other pertinent issues as needed.

• Responsible for acting in accordance with all DFI policies and procedures.

• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has supervisory responsibilities for Environmental Technicians who are responsible for maintaining the safety and cleanliness of the plant.

a. Education and / or Experience
A bachelor's degree in HSE or a related field or High School Diploma/GED AND 4 years relevant experience. Prefer experience in an occupational health & safety position in a heavy industrial environment with auditing & training skills. An understanding of federal and state laws. Knowledge of available contractors and suppliers of safety and environmental services/supplies. Knowledge of industrial safety procedures, including lock out/tag out; high pressure testing, machining, assembly and hazardous materials handling. Knowledge of relevant codes/standards (i.e. OSHA, EPA). Computer literate (Windows and MS Office, spreadsheets, and Power Point). Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable to fast-paced, ever-changing environments. Excellent team orientation and communication skills.
