This is a reel from last year that I’m resharing in honor of Nell’s birthday today. The one who knocks me off my feet 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘢𝘺. ⁣ ⁣ The reason my life feels like it has to stop just to get through each hill of her emotions. ⁣ ⁣ The one who holds on, any way she can, to control her uncontrollable world.⁣ ⁣But the highlight, I keep reminding myself, is when she puts me in my place, yells through tears “𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐲, 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧!!” ⁣or “look at me mommy!” or “hug me and help me” when she really needs it. ⁣ and who decided to finally use the potty when I said “let’s take our time, let’s just be together and see what happens” - basically 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐠𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐨.⁣ ⁣ The one who told me one day a few months ago “no more pull ups at night” and despite me warning her she’ll wake up in a pool of p*e, actually never needed one ever again. These children, they’re going to change the world, 𝘸𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮.⁣ ⁣ My advice: stop trying to control them, they’re seeming desire to resist, do it themselves, do it their way, and anything else is actually them screaming out “𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧….𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐞.”⁣ Now more than ever - I appreciate how important it is to let these children be who they are: unapologetically themselves. They’re the ones who already know how to fight for what is right and scream for what is wrong. Happy birthday my Nellie Bellie, my sassy sensitive fireball who lets everyone know that you’ve arrived no matter where you go. Who loves and feels so so deeply. The fiercest girl I know (I really mean that!) My sidekick, my best friend, my love, my soul. I can’t wait to see you change the world. #FOUR Words in the reel are by @jessurlichs
