The winter solstice occurs around December 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. It will happen on Saturday 21 at 11.19 p.m. EDT in America. The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day of the year when the North Pole is tilted farthest away from the sun, and so the sun is at its lowest elevation in the sky.
